Put elements side by side — atomic number, mass, shells, category — and see why small proton differences matter enormously.

Concept

Why compare at all?

An element's numbers mean little in isolation. Is 79 protons a lot? Is a mass of 238 heavy? Comparison gives the numbers scale.

The most revealing dimensions to compare are atomic number, atomic mass, shell structure, and chemical category — together they sketch an element's whole character.
